Lisu Lodge
Hilltribe Culture and Adventure Awaits
Lisu Lodge invites you to embark on an immersive curated experience offering cultural and adventure within a serene hill tribe village. Nestled in Chiang Mai Province, northern Thailand, about 50 km or a 1-hour drive from Chiang Mai city, we’re surrounded by sprawling rice fields and orchards. Lisu Lodge stands as a community-based initiative dedicated to preserving the natural heritage of Chiang Mai’s hill tribes.
Built-in traditional Lisu style with modern comforts, the lodge has 3 hill tribe-inspired guest houses with a total of 14 guest rooms. The guest houses overlook the lush fields and hills surrounding the valley. Each spacious guest room has an en-suite bathroom. Guests have a choice of double rooms, twin-bedded rooms, triple bedrooms, and interconnected rooms with connecting doors.
Operated by members of the surrounding hill-tribe villages, your stay at the lodge brings authentic hospitality paired with community insight. Our tours and activities are guided by villagers and local experts, complemented by locally sourced meals harvested from our organic rice fields and vegetable garden.
Standard Itinerary
Located amidst rolling hills, the lodge is named after the nearby Lisu hill tribe village. It offers a chance to experience authentic hill tribe culture firsthand. Your lisu hosts will ensure a comfortable stay, while tours and activities are led by villagers or local experts. Savor delicious meals featuring local ingredients, many of which are sourced directly from the lodge's organic rice fields and vegetable garden.
Hill Tribe Community
In Thailand, the hill tribe is usually known for all various ethnic groups who mostly inhabit the mountainous northern and western regions. Migrating from various parts of China and Southeast Asia, hill tribe people in Thailand have different systems of customs, laws, and beliefs. There are at least ten hill tribes living in the country – many of them can be divided into distinct subgroups. Each tribe has distinctly crafted costumes, though many men and children now adopt Western clothes for everyday wear.
The hill tribe villagers at Lisu Lodge are of the Lisu tribe. It is believed they settled down in this area more than 30 years ago. The Lisu hill tribe lives in extended families. Traditionally, the women wear a blue or green knee-length tunic, with a wide black belt and blue or green trousers. Men wear green or yellow baggy trousers and a blue jacket. However, many of them now adopt modern clothes for everyday wear and reserve elaborate dresses for special occasions such as weddings and New Year celebrations.
The Lisu villagers here mostly work in farms and handicraft. They are fully acquainted with the operations of the lodge, and we have received their kind co-operation over the years. To minimize any negative impact on their way of life and on the natural surroundings, the local communities have been involved in the development of all the tours offered by the lodge. The Lisu villagers are trained and employed to take care of guests during their stay.
Activities
The beauty of the program is an opportunity to experience the way of life of the Lisu people. The village tour, alongside other exciting and fun activities, is available as an extension to the package, including whitewater rafting, a tea garden tour at our very own garden and roastery Araksa, nature walks, massages, and much more.
